Description
Color offset – Janosch (Horst Eckert)
Numbered 1249/3000, signed in pencil; inscribed on the back: 'Der kleine Hase läuft mit seiner Sense schnell nach Hause!' (The little rabbit runs quickly home with his scythe!), Teteroo, September 25, 2007, Martin; image dimensions approx. 19 x 23 cm; with mat and frame; total dimensions approx. 37 x 40 cm. Ref.: Janosch was born in 1931 in Hindenburg, Upper Silesia. Horst Eckert—his legal name—is a German illustrator, children's book author, and writer. He currently lives in Tenerife (Spain).
Following the end of World War II and his father's return in 1946, his parents fled with him to West Germany. Janosch worked in textile factories near Oldenburg and attended a textile vocational school in Krefeld, where he took a course in pattern design under Gerhard Kadow, a student of Paul Klee.
After a stay in Paris, he moved to Munich in 1953, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts—including under Ernst Geitlinger—but was forced to abandon his art studies after a few trial semesters due to a 'lack of talent.' He subsequently worked as a freelance artist. In 1956, he began his career as a writer, contributing to the arts and culture sections of newspapers.
His books have been translated into numerous languages. In 1985 and 1989, his stories were adapted for television under the title *Janoschs Traumstunde* (Janosch's Dream Hour).
Janosch is currently a member of the advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation. He also supports the German Wildlife Foundation's 'Spatzenkampagne' (Sparrow Campaign). He explains his involvement by stating that he needs to make amends in some way, as his father had been a bird catcher.
