Fled to West Germany in 1949 to escape the communist dictatorship. Studied fine arts at the Werkschule in Münster under Vincenz Pieper. 1952 art teacher in Mainz. One year at the Berlin University of the Arts. Scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. Afterwards, he settled in Bonn as a freelance painter. From 1960 to 1963, he headed the 'Surface' department at the Bremen State Academy of Art. From 1963 to 1987, professor at the Frankfurt University of Fine Arts. Honorary citizen of the city of Langen
